Your Child's First Visit

After checking in, we will bring you and your child back to take radiographs (x-rays), provide a dental cleaning, and apply topical fluoride. Completion of these tasks is dependent upon your child’s cooperativeness, degree of visible tooth decay, and your comfort level. Young children are often times very anxious, fussy and defiant as we attempt to explore their mouths. If this occurs, the dental assistant may ask parents to sit their child on their lap and hold their child’s hands- this is done in order to prevent injury from the grabbing of dental instruments. It is very important to remember that nothing during the examination will cause pain to your child. Again however, we will not do anything that you are not comfortable with.

After completion of the exam, the doctor will thoroughly discuss any findings, recommendations, as well as treatment options with the parent/ legal guardian. We encourage parents to take an active role in deciding which treatment is best for their child and will provide a detailed treatment plan, estimated total cost for treatment, estimated dental insurance coverage, and any out-of-pocket cost. We will also go over payment options, schedule an appointment, and answer any final treatment questions.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Dental Association recommend that children should begin visiting the Pediatric dentist no later than the age of one. This may seem young; however it is very important that newly sprouted teeth receive proper dental care from the beginning.

Initial appointments for infants and young children allow for the doctor to help educate parents on proper cleaning and brushing methods, discuss healthy diet habits, and to familiarize children with the dentist and dental office. This ultimately helps build confidence in young children, helps to build a strong foundation for a lifetime of healthy oral hygiene habits, and builds a relationship between the doctor and child.

During your child’s initial visit at Wild West Children's Dentistry, we will familiarize you and your child with our office, staff and practices. Our fun and inviting office décor along with our friendly staff will ensure that your child feels safe and comfortable.
